  What is Hot Cross Buns?

The Hot Cross Buns is a spiced sweet bun is made from of the cross, and on the top marked with the crosses. And it is traditionally eaten on Good Friday in the United Kingdom; Ireland; India; New Zealand; and some parts of America, including Canada and the United States. The main ingredients in the Hot Cross Buns are Flour and Currants or raisin with spices.

          History of Hot Cross Bun.

In the 12th-century the Monk introduced the cross to the buns.
The origination of Hot Cross Buns is an Anglican Monk who baked the buns and marked the cross on the top of the buns in the honour of Good Friday and it gained so much of popularity and it became a symbol of Easter Day.

Ingredients:-

  1. Flour, 500 grams
  2. Salt, 10 grams
  3. Mixed spice, 10 grams 
  4. Castor sugar, 130 grams 
  5. Yeast, 50 grams
  6. Milk, 350 ml
  7. Butter, 60 grams 
  8. Chopped gel, 50 grams 
  9. Currants, 50 grams 
  10. Sultanas, 50 grams 
For Piping Crosses

  1.  Flour, 200 grams
  2. Egg, 100 grams

Method of cooking:-

  1. All the ingredients should be mixed which are mentioned above but do not mix it with butter ( don't use butter in it ).
  2. Knead the dough for 5 minutes on slow speed or until the gluten has formed.
  3. Add the softened butter and knead again till a smooth dough is obtained.
  4. Keep the dough for proofing, knockback and rest again.
  5. Scale a dough in 25-30 grams size and rest.
  6. Shape the rolls into balls and arrange on a baking tray and allow to proof.
  7. Mix the flour and egg to form a batter of piping consistency. Glaze the rolls with egg wash.
  8. Pipe a cross over the proofed rolls and bake at 200°c for 15-20 minutes. 

Remarks:-

  • Use fresh yeast, the procedure of fresh yeast is first dissolved in warm water and keep aside for few minutes.
  • In mixed spice, you can use cinnamon powder and nutmeg powder.
  • First, knead the dough with milk after adding butter in it and knead again.
  • Always grease the baking tray and put some flour on it.
  • Damp a muslin cloth on it. Prove it for 20-25 minutes. 
  • Bake at a temperature of 180°c for 10-15 minutes.  
  • And at the end basted with butter and sugar syrup.
